About the event

Phil is a guitarist known for his work with iconic artists like Hugh Masekela, Tony Allen, Mulatu Astatke, Khaled and Osibisa as well as genre-busting London bands like Lokkhi Terra, Cubafrobeat, Soothsayers, roots artists like Dele Sosimi and Cornel Campbell, and a host of Brit-jazz projects.

His live band features bassist Matheus Nova (Antonio Forcione, Ed Motta); Brazilian drummer Marius Rodrigues (Da Lata, Steve Lodder, Monica Vasconcelos etc); Maurizio Ravalico (Collocutor, Dele Sosimi, Jamiroquai etc) on percussion, and flute icon Rowland Sutherland (Airto Moreira, David Murray, plus many ensembles of his own). Rowland’s virtuosic textures and lines together with Maurizio’s self-designed sonic universe and openness to free exploration push the quintet to spontaneous musical territory, using an eclectic blend of Afrocentric originals and homages to Tony Williams, Coltrane, Bowie and Hermeto as starting points. The band have played sell out shows at Ronnie Scott's and Pizza Express Dean St. and have also recently hosted a masterclass at SOAS University of London.
